- What's the major difference between cable and satellite TV?
Satellite TV requires a dish and a receiver. The dish should
point to the exact direction of the satellite. Signal depends on the
weather conditions. Strong cloud may block the satellite signal and
reduce the strength of signal.
Cable TV should cable to transfer signal. It's not depended on
the weather condition. But normally the price will be higher than
Satellite TV.
- What's your experience with cable and satellite TV?
I once tried comcast and
Dish Network. From my
experience, both signal are pretty good. I did not see any
difference during small raining. But when you switch channel,
satellite TV has nearly 1 second delay before the picture actually
show up. For cable TV, there is no delay at all.
Comcast always has some
promotion. You can easily get 19.99$ promotion for the first 3
month. It's a good deal if you only need this for 3 month. There is
no contact or commitment when you sign up
Comcast cable. I used to cancel
the cable immediately after the promotion with no problem. There is
tax and additional charge around 5 to 10$.
Dish Network requires a
1 year commitment when you sign up satellite TV. The price is fixed
for 24.99$ + 5$ for American
Top 60 and local package. The good thing is you can upgrade and
downgrade your service at any time. Just make sure you keep the
minimum package (24.99$) for at least one year. I was told there is
no additional tax and other charge but since I still not receive any
bill yet. I am not 100% sure.
- Someone told me I can get the CCTV program with no monthly
charge. Is this a good choice?
There are some company offer dish which can receive CCTV3, CCTV4,
CCTV5 with no monthly charge. You should be able to find this kind
of company easily inside any Chinatown or Chinese newspaper. But in
this way, the dish itself will cost you around 200$. It's not a good
choice for me because if I choose the
Dish Network, I can get the
dish for free and also I can cancel the international program
anytime. In my case, I do not really need Chinese program after my
parents leave. Also after one year, I will get two free dish. You
may want to make different choice if you think differently.
Also, I think their dish may be an illegal service which means
you may lose the signal anytime later.
- Any limitation for the satellite TV installation?
For satellite TV, the dish has to be point to the exact direction
of the satellite. If your house do not have a clear view for the
specific satellite, you may have some problem. Check Emma's post on

Make sure your home is good for both America satellite and
Chinese satellite. Here is
some Chinese post about the basic knowledge about satellite TV. The
article is good but I need to point out personally I do not like
this TV channel (about FLG) at all.
- I lived in an apartment, can I install the satellite TV?
The FCC has mandated that NO LANDLORD, CONDO, CITY, STATE or any
other organization or government agency can disallow anyone with
DEEDED SPACE or a BALCONY (in the case of an apartment) that faces a
satellite, the right to put up a satellite dish under 1 meter (1.5
meters in Alaska).

Frankly speaking, I am not sure about this either. I found this
one on fatwallet and maybe it's some refer program. The only reason
I chose this company is because I got this information first. You
may want to try other company to find the best deal. You can also

I checked the dishnetwork
website. They have a refer program called
clubdish program. You can request a ClubDish gift card. When
your friends sign up
dishnetwork using your gift card. You will get 5$ credit each
month for one year.
This means if you refer 6 friends to join dishnetwork. You will
get your basic service 29.99$ one free for one year. I just request
my dishclub gift card, I will post it here after I get the card.

- Any difference for my friends if he/she sign up through me?
If your friend only needs basic American
Top 60, I do not think there is so much difference. Your
friends can get free installation, free DVR also.
For international program, it requires a separate dish. In my
case, I order it through vmcsatellite. The req told me to install the
basic service first (American
Top 60 and local package). In this way, I got two free dish. Then
I need to call back after the installation to add international
package. The req said if I did not do it this way. I will be charged
99$ for the second dish.
I think you can do the same thing by calling dishNetwork directly
even I am not sure at this point. If you get more information. Please
let me know.
